In 1620, about half of the territory that is now the continental United States was not under the control or influence of Europeans. The land was inhabited by various Native American tribes and nations. The other half that was under some European influence at the time was primarily colonized by the English (for example, Jamestown, founded in 1607), the Dutch (New Netherland, which included present-day New York), the French (in areas like present-day Canada and parts of the Mississippi River valley), and the Spanish (in Florida and the Southwest). However, the vast interior regions were largely unmapped and unexplored by Europeans in 1620.
